 U. S. S. DENVER delivered to Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pa., by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey, and placed in commission. Captain Robt. B. Carney, U. S. Navy, Commanding.

Pre-commissioning Watch

At 0915 CL58 was secured starboard side to west side of pier #4, Nay Yard, Philadelphia by the builders, New York Shipbuilding Corporation personnel for delivery to U. S. Navy. All available naval personnel under orders to U.S.S. Denver had been embarked prior to vessels departure from the building yard at Camden, N. J. or embarked at Navy Yard Philadelphia prior to 1015. At 1015 sounded assembly at foul weather paroles. 1020 began marching to the ship’s hanger preparatory to commissioning ceremony. At 1035 Navy Yard band and at 1045 a Marine guard furnished by the Commissioning Officer Marine Barracks, Navy Yard, Philadelphia came on board and were formed in the hanger. At 1110 Commandant Navy Yard Philadelphia, Rear Admiral M. F. Draernel, U. S. Navy, came on board and was escorted to the balcony of the hanger by the prospective Commanding Officer, Captain Robert B. Carney, U. S. Navy. The Commandant addressed the ships company and at 1116, stated that by the authority vested in him he place U. S. S. Denver (CL58) in commission; hoisted colors and the flag of Rear Admiral Draernel. 1118 Captain Robert B. Carney U. S. Navy read his orders from the Chief of the Bureau of Naval Personnel (file 33105 date Oct. 5, 1942) to duty in command of U. S. S. Denver when commissioned, assumed command, briefly addressed the ships company and at 1122 directed the Executive Officer, Commander Neil D. Brantly to set the watch. At 1125, according to the customs of the service, set the watch, consisting of the first section.

At 1125, the first watch was set. At 1140 the Commandant, Fourth Naval District left the ship and his flag was hauled down.

Receiving the following services from the dock: electricity, steam, fresh water, comp. air, and telephone. All boilers secured. Ships present MONTPELIER (SOPA), GHERADI, H.M.S. SEA WOLF and various yard and district craft.

Fitting out, Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pa.

0 – 4 Moored starboard side to west side of pier #4 Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with the following lines in use: four crossed springs forward and four crossed springs aft. Receiving the dock: electricity, steam, fresh water, compressed air, and telephone service. Ships present: U.S.S MONTPELIER (SOPA), U.S.S. GHERADI, H.M.S. SEA WOLF, and various yard and district craft. 0200 discover about 5 inches of water flooding the crews galley, cause by eductors backing water up through the drain pies to the galley. Took measures to change adjustment of eductor to permit discharge overboard, which relieve the flooding situation, permitting galley drains to operate in normal manner. The First Lieutenant, Supply Officer, and Engineer Officer of were notified when the flooding condition was discovered. Damage to equipment to be determined by test.
