During this entire period, U. S. S. DENVER was engaged in outfitting at Philadelphia navy Yard, under the Commandant of that Yard, with authority of the Chief of Naval Operations to operate in District waters at discretion of the Commandant.

0000 – 0004 Moored starboard side to west side of Pier 4, Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pa. with four crossed springs forward, four crossed springs aft and wire head and stern lines. Receiving steam, electricity, fresh and flushing water, compressed air and telephone services from dock. Ships present, USS Denver (SOPA), USS Gherardi, USS Bass, USS Bonita, USS Barracuda, HMS Royal Sovereign and various district and yard craft.

0 – 4 Moored starboard side to west side of pier #4 Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pa. with four crossed springs forward, four cross springs aft and wire bow and stern lines. Receiving the following facilities from the docks: fresh water, steam, compressed air, electricity, and telephone. Ships present Denver (SOPA), Barracuda, Bonita, Bass, HMS Royal Sovereign and various other yard and district craft.

0800 – 1200 Moored as before. 0915 Disconnected water, electricity, and steam services from dock. Single all lines. 0920 John H. Vitt came aboard to pilot ship to drydock #2. All departments reported readiness for getting underway. 0953 Got underway using five (5) tugs to move to dry dock. 1007 Bow crossed sill of dry dock. 1008 Docked in dry dock #2 Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pa. 1045 Closed dry dock caisson. 1145 Commenced receiving electrical services from dock.

1200 – 1600 Docked in drydock #2, as before, partially waterborne. 1200 Let fires die out under boiler #3 and cut out same at 1205. 1200 commenced receiving flushing water, fresh water, water for fire mains, and steam from the Navy Yard. 1315 Telephone communications reestablished with Yard including outside telephone, Yard telephone, security teletalk, army air raid warning circuit, and shore connection through ship’s service switchboard. 1440 Ship settles on keel blocks, pumping out dock resumed and completed. Roller path data taken in turrets, mounts, and directors. 1430 USS Vixen stood in; proceeded into back channel flying flag of CINCLANT. 1545 The Captain called officially upon the Commander-in-Chief, U. S. Atlantic Fleet.

Additional remarks by the Commanding Officer:

 

This date was the last of the outfitting period. The U. S. S. DENVER departed from Navy Yard, Philadelphia at 2118 and proceeded down the Delaware River in order to be in position the following morning to proceed to and arrive in Chesapeake Bay area by nightfall and thus be enabled to release U. S. S. BUCK as escort on December 1, at the request of the Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet.
