Townsend
A sound off the coast of New Jersey.
Construction of Townsend (AV-18) - a Kenneth Whiting-class
seaplane tender - was originally assigned to the Philadelphia Navy Yard
but was cancelled on 14 November 1944. A contract for building the ship
was awarded to the Todd Pacific Shipyard, Tacoma, Wash., on 1 December
1944; and her keel was laid down on 30 June 1945. However, the contract
was terminated on 11 August 1945.
