This is a listing of all known preserved naval vessels in the United States. The list includes US Navy, Coast Guard, and Army vessels, excluding the Army Corps of Engineers. Civilian ships that were temporarily taken into naval service during time of war are included, as are foreign naval vessels and replicas of naval vessels. Small landing craft, ship's boats, surfboats, and similar small craft are not included.
Ships are listed in alphabetical order by name (or number, if unnamed). The name, number, type, and date of construction of each vessel are listed, along with the location where the ship is preserved and the name of the group/organization that is responsible for the vessel. A link to each ship/museum's official website is provided, where available; if no official website exists, an unofficial website may be used instead.
Although most of these vessels are at least partially restored and are open to the public, some are in the early stages of restoration and are NOT open to the public. If you plan to visit any of these museums, you should call ahead to be certain the ship will be open when you arrive. You can also check the Historic Naval Ships Vistors Guide for more information about these ships.
There is a separate list of Current Preservation Efforts for vessels that are not yet preserved, and a "Museums No More" list of former museum ships that are no longer in existence.
If you know of additional preserved naval vessels, or have additional information concerning any of the vessels listed here, please drop me an email.
This list is created and maintained by Andrew Toppan. Last updated 20 April 2002, Version 3.11.

This listing includes all known efforts to preserve naval vessels in the United States. The format of the list is the same as the Preserved Naval Vessels List. These vessels are NOT open to the public, and in most cases are moored in naval reserve fleets. Please see the individual links for information on how you can help these preservation efforts.
For more information about the US Navy ship donation process, see the Navy Ship Donation Program website. Note that the Ship Donation Program information only applies to vessels acquired directly from the US Navy; some of the vessels listed here are being acquired from other sources, such as the Maritime Administration or foreign owners.
If you know of other preservation efforts, or have additional information concerning any of the projects listed here, please drop me an email.

This is a listing of museum ships that have been destroyed or removed from "preserved" status in the recent past, and of recent musuem efforts that have not succeeded. The format of the list is the same as the Preserved Naval Vessels List. Place names in (parentheses) indicate planned museums that were never established; all others were established museum ships that are no longer preserved. This information is presented as a record of past museums, and to answer the question "What ever happened to that ship...."
If you know of other ships that should be on this list, or if you have additional information concerning any of the ships listed here, please drop me an email.
