Steaming in company with Task Group 77.2 Rear Admiral T. D. RUDDOCK is O.T.C. in U.S.S. WEST VIRGINIA with MARYLAND, COLORADO, PORTLAND, MINNEAPOLIS, PHOENIX, COLUMBIA, DENVER, and MONTPELIER plus the destroyers NICHOLAS, LANG, MOALE, O’BRIEN, LAFFEY, BARTON, EATON, RENSHAW, SAUFLEY, CONWAY, CONNER, CONY, SIGOURNEY, WALLER, and BENNION. This task group is patrolling the waters of Leyte Gulf, Philippine Islands. The cruising disposition is "5-R". Steaming in company with Task Group 77.2. OTC is Rear Admiral T. D. Ruddock in U.S.S. At 1112 received U.S. mail from the destroyer CONNER. 1112 Commenced maneuvering independently on various courses at various speeds while receiving United States mail from U.S.S. CONNER. 1115 Set Condition of Readiness III in anti-aircraft battery. 1115 Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples. Conditions: normal. 1135 U.S.S. CONNER cast off having delivered fifty-seven bags of mail. 1140 Having resumed station in formation, resumed zig-zagging in accordance with plan No. 6.

Riggs, (ComCruDiv 12) in DENVER is OTC. Steaming in cruising formation "5-R" with WEST VIRGINIA guide; fleet axis is 180oT(PGC); DENVER station 1.5330; zig-zagging in accordance with plan No. 6, on base course 111oT(PGC), speed 17 knots (170 RPM). The ship is darkened, in special Material Condition "B" and Condition of Readiness III set throughout the ship. Boilers No. 2 and 3 are in use for steaming. 0105 Cut in boiler No. 4 on main steam line and secured No. 3. 0246 U.S.S. SIGOURNEY left formation to investigate unidentified vessel. Bearing 075oT(PGC), distance 5 miles. 0247 Changed course to 171oT(PGC) and ceased zig-zagging. 0302 Changed course to 111oT(PGC). At 0317 U.S.S. SIGOURNEY reported unidentified tug dead in water showing no signs of life. After firing several shots across the bow, a party boarded the tug, acting under orders from O.T.C., and found nothing. 0317 U.S.S. SIGOURNEY reports unidentified vessel is tug dead in the water with no signs of life aboard. SIGOURNEY ordered to fire across bow. 0330 Changed course left to 091oT(PGC) and commenced zig-zagging in accordance with plan No. 6. 0336 U.S.S. SIGOURNEY under orders from OTC boarded tug and found no lie aboard.
