Notes:
This is another class of ships that
falls into more than one area in the history
of the RCN. They were originally launched during the Second World War
as
members of the RIVER class frigates. After the war, a total of
twenty-one
were modified into the escort as shown above. This included adding a
bigger
bridge, a taller funnel, new guns, and enclosing the quarterdeck to
house
two Squid ASW mortars. They then served into the late 1960s, with the
exception
of VICTORIAVILLE who served until 1973, although in a new role (diving
tender)
and under a new name (GRANBY). Another member of this class,
BUCKINGHAM,
was fitted with a temporary landing pad on the stern, and participated
in
some of the first helicopter trials in the RCN.
