ANTICOSTI Class

(MSA) mine-sweeping/laying auxiliary

These two ships are former oil rig supply vessels which the Navy bought in the late 1980s to use as minesweeping training ships, presumably to prepare for the arrival of the MCDVs in the 1990s. Information seems to indicate that both had their minesweeping gear removed as the MCDVs came on-line to replace them; they used a different type of minesweeping equipment than the MCDVs in the first place. ANTICOSTI was used in the East Coast MARCOT exercise as a minelayer on at least one occasion. ANTICOSTI was also fitted with astern refueling gear in 1995. Both were paid off at the turn of the century.
