Atlantic Eagle
The tug Atlantic Eagle enters the harbour at St. John's, Newfoundland. At the top of the shot is Cabot Tower which sits atop Signal Hill; this is where Marconi received the first trans-atlantic wireless transmission in 1901. Sandy McClearn photo.

Sea smoke schooner
Sea smoke obscurs a side-trawler (converted for off-shore supply duties) and a schooner, which was raised from the bottom of Halifax Harbour after Hurricane Juan in October, 2003. Sandy McClearn photo.

Sea smoke at night
HMC Dockyard in Halifax, NS. Taken at night, the harbour is covered in "sea smoke", which occurs when the water temperature is actually higher than that of the air; Halifax experienced temperatures of -20 degrees Celsius in January, with wind chill factors that made it feel as if it were -34 degrees Celsius. Cape Race
The Cape Race lighthouse, which was established in 1856, is located on the southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland. The wireless station at Cape Race received the distress signals send by the Titanic before she sank in 1912. Sandy McClearn photo.

Batavia, built in Holland in the 1980s, is a reconstruction of a 17th century Dutch merchantman that was wrecked off the Australian coast in 1629. She is pictured here in February, 2001 in Sydney, Australia, where she was moored from December 1999 until early 2001. Sandy McClearn photo.

Hector in Pictou
The Hector is a reconstruction of an 18th century Dutch ship that in 1773 brought settlers to Pictou, Nova Scotia, from Scotland. In this photo she is seen alongside in Pictou Harbour. The Hector was reportedly blown ashore in September 2003, during the height of Hurricane Juan; her current status is unknown. Sandy McClearn photo.
