Maritime Photography


The Haze Gray and Underway Photo Gallery will showcase maritime related photos that do not necessarily belong in other sections of the site.  Subject matter will include maritime or naval subjects, news items, the sea in general, and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. Contributions are welcome, but we reserve the right to choose or otherwise edit (for quality) whatever photos we decide to display. Photographs should either be in the public domain, or belong to the person submitting it. Photos must be at least 900 pixels wide to be considered.

Photos displayed here remain the property of the photographer, and may not be used by other parties without the expressed consent of the copyright holder.

Eide Transporter
The sealift ship Eide Transporter enters a thick fog bank in Halifax Harbour. She is carrying the crippled submarine HMCS CHICOUTIMI , which suffered a fire off the coast of Ireland in October, 2004. Sandy McClearn photo.

LASH
A LASH (Lighter Aboard Ship) ship offloads cargo in Halifax Harbour. These ships carry upwards of 80 pre-loaded container barges, which can be offloaded into the water and then towed individually ashore. A large mobile crane can traverse the entire cargo deck of the ship in order to load and unload the containers. In this case, a tug is taking a container barge to a nearby wharf. USNS Comfort
The USNS COMFORT is based in Baltimore, and is one of two large hospital ships serving the US Navy. COMFORT and her sistership MERCY were both converted from oil tanker hulls, and this photo shows how much she dwarfs HMCS ST. JOHN'S (foreground). Sandy McClearn photo.
