Renown was built during WWI as a light battlecruiser, with extremely light armor and high speed. Renown and her sister Repulse underwent several major overhauls and reconstructions, and as a result the two ships differed significantly. Renown received the most complete reconstruction, which included new machinery and the modern superstructure seen here, similar to that fitted in the newest RN battleships. Repulse had a more modest overhaul, retaining her original superstructure and tripod mast until her demise in 1941. Renown survived WWII as one of the RN's fastest heavy warships, but the elderly ship was discarded soon after the war ended.
