Bavaria

Bavaria is a state in southern Germany.

Bavaria (No. 2179), a cargo vessel, was built in 1905 by Recherstine Shiffwerke, Hamburg, Germany; seized by the Cuban Government during World War I; turned over to the Shipping Board; transferred to the Navy; and commissioned 4 January 1918 with Lieutenant Commander C. A. von Heygendorff, USNRF, assuming command four days later.

Bavaria was assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service and after fitting out at Norfolk Navy Yard proceeded to New York. She joined a convoy which sailed 7 March and arrived at Bordeaux, France, 26 March. She returned to Norfolk 30 April and, after making a trip to Brunswick, Gal, in May, was placed out of commission at Newport News, Va., 11 June 1918 and returned to the Shipping Board.
