The second Amphion (AR-13) was launched 15 May 1 1945 by Tampa Shipbuilding Co., Inc., Tampa, Fla.; sponsored by Mrs. E. E. Orem, wife of Captain Orem; and commissioned 30 January 1946, Captain M. W. Abrahams in command.

Amphion joined Service Squadron 2, Atlantic Fleet, in 1946 and has since operated out of Norfolk, Va., making runs to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Bermuda, and Newfoundland. At times, she has served as force and squadron flagship.
